With over 15 years of experience in the financial services and investment space, ALI Fellow Refilwe Moloto (Class XI: Tekano) is making great strides in the media and broadcasting industry. A financial analyst turned media doyenne, Refilwe started her journey with radio as a business and finance news contributor on the Afternoon Drive with John Maythamon CapeTalk. Thereafter, she landed her own afternoon slot, Upfront with Refilwe.
Just when you think Refilwe’s career progression in radio couldn’t be more impressive, she has now been given the exciting opportunity of hosting her own breakfast show on CapeTalk. She is Africa’s first black woman to anchor and host a commercial talk radio breakfast slot on her own. Speaking on the new breakfast show, Tessa Van Staden, CapeTalk’s station manager, told Channel 24: “We are incredibly proud to be making talk radio waves by providing a platform for a talented, highly accomplished and intelligent woman to set the agenda. In fact, Refilwe joins a small club globally in this regard.”
Refilwe’s incredible feat was also recognised by South African radio maven Azania Mosaka, who said Refilwe’s new slot was “groundbreaking”. “We are pushing back the boundaries, they said we couldn’t have the mic on certain shows, but we did and we do. I am so excited to see what women can still achieve, not just in broadcasting Refilwe is a powerhouse, she is smart, she is well-travelled and she has such broad interests. She will be at home behind that mic,” she told IOL.
Refilwe is looking forward to this exciting new adventure. “It’s a thrill to be taking on the morning drive, and the momentousness of this African milestone is not lost on me. It was an honour to build a truly special show from scratch, along with our ‘Upfront with Refilwe Moloto’ listeners, and I’m excited to continue those informative, challenging and insightful discussions, with all the news and views you need to kickstart your day,” she told Channel 24.
Tune in to Breakfast with Refilwe on CapeTalk, Monday to Friday from 6 am to 9 am, where she’ll be discussing news, views, business, traffic and weather.
Refilwe, the ALI family is very proud of you and we wish you all the best!
