Leadership That Moves Beyond Intention

Across the world, elections and youth-led civic movements are placing trust, inclusion and accountability at the centre of public life. Young people are challenging corruption, economic exclusion and unresponsive institutions, reminding us that participation extends beyond the ballot box.

South Africa faces its own important test on 4 November 2026, when citizens vote in the Local Government Elections. Their choices will reflect lived experiences of water, electricity, sanitation, roads and waste removal — and their demand for ethical, capable leadership that turns promises into measurable improvements. Our recent ALI SA dialogue with the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, emphasised the need for capable leadership, skilled municipal managers and new financial models for municipalities, which are envisioned in the local government white paper.

This moment speaks directly to ALI SA’s purpose. Leadership must move beyond intention to courage, accountability and action.

As part of our theme this year, which is “deeper fellowship engagement”, through our dialogues, the Good Society Seminar, the Fellowship Circles and the Class XV and Class XVI journey, Fellows continue to build ventures, strengthen communities and influence institutions and public debate.

We will be launching two new initiatives to strengthen connections and support fellows’ ventures. AGLN Connect will help Fellows connect across classes and the wider Aspen Global Leadership Network. The ALI SA Impact Hub will further provide an ecosystem of support to Fellows’ ventures and enhance collaboration and practical impact.

As we conclude a busy year, I encourage all Fellows to attend the Annual ALI SA Impact Dinner on 25 November 2026. The evening will provide a valuable opportunity to reconnect as classes, strengthen fellowship across the network and participate in a timely dialogue with a distinguished panel of speakers on South Africa’s direction following the Local Government Elections. We would love each class to book a table together and join us for this special evening.

As citizens prepare to make their voices heard, may we remember that leadership is tested not by what we intend, but by what we do, sustain and account for.

In fellowship,

Lynette Chen
