From Reflection to Action: Celebrating Changemakers and Community in the ALI SA Fellowship

As we approach the midpoint of 2025, I find myself reflecting on the quiet lessons that come with the changing season. In nature, winter signals a time of hibernation—a pause to look inward, take stock and prepare for what lies ahead. For many of us, this is a rare opportunity to step back from the noise, reconnect with our purpose and ask ourselves: where are we on our journey towards building the Good Society?

This season of reflection echoes the heart of our recent Good Society Seminar with alumni Fellows gathering for a weekend retreat of reflection and deep discussions. Fellows engaged in courageous dialogue, challenged assumptions and reaffirmed the values at the heart of our work. Whether through challenging conversations at the Globalisation Seminar in Jodhpur, the honest dialogue at the Good Society Seminar, or the bold, principled statements made in the face of global events, our fellowship continues to show what it means to lead with integrity and vision. These moments remind us that real progress, both personal and collective, calls for self-examination and decisive action.

The Good Society Seminar, held at DeHoek Country Hotel, created space for Fellows to reconnect, re-examine the foundations that guide us and check in with ourselves about what needs to shift. In a world that often rewards speed and spectacle, we are reminded that sustained progress is built on steady, thoughtful engagement and a willingness to adapt.

Looking ahead, I am energised by the possibilities that lie before us, especially as we prepare for the Africa Impact Forum (AIF) 2025. Our theme for this year, Africa the Good Society – The Power of We, is a call to action. It challenges us to recognise the strength of community, shared vision and collaboration. Drawing on the principle of Ubuntu, we are reminded that our destinies are linked and that the most meaningful progress is achieved together. Please diarise to join us at the Africa Impact Forum 2025 to be held in Cape Town on 2-6 October 2025 and many ALI SA classes will be utilising this event as a class reunion opportunity. The challenge is on to see which class can gather most of its fellows at AIF2025!

The stories in this Impact Review reflect the breadth and depth of the ALI SA fellowship. From powerful statements that challenge and inspire to the many ways our Fellows are stepping up as changemakers, this edition celebrates a community in motion. Across the network, Fellows are embracing new opportunities, launching ventures, receiving recognition, publishing books and engaging in meaningful dialogue. Each contribution is a testament to the impact of purposeful leadership and the enduring belief that Africa’s future will be shaped not by one, but by many working together.

“In a world that often rewards speed and spectacle, we are reminded that sustained progress is built on steady, thoughtful engagement and a willingness to adapt.”

Embracing this season of renewal, I encourage each of you to reflect on your own journey. What needs to change in your approach or mindset? How can we, as a fellowship, harness the collective strength of our community to build the Good Society in Africa?

Thank you for your continued commitment to this journey. I look forward to the conversations, collaborations and milestones we will share in the coming months. Let’s continue to shape Africa’s future—together.

In Fellowship,

Lynette Chen
