SWEAT Africa 2026: Where Ideas Met Action

ALI SA Fellows at SWEAT Africa 2026 Left to Right: Futhi Mtoba Class II: Kilimanjaro), Joshin Raghubar (Class IV: Kalipha), Prof Tulio de Oliveira (Class XV: Khawuleza), Andi Kawa (Class VIII: Mahube)

How do we help more young Africans build, not just dream?” That question helped launch SWEAT Africa, which grew from an early conversation into a two-day accelerator in Stellenbosch on 13 and 14 February 2026.

At the heart of it was ALI SA Fellow Prof Tulio de Oliveira (Class XV: Khawuleza), whose vision helped shape the event, alongside a broader group of collaborators who brought it to life. What followed was not a standard conference, but a working space where founders, students, investors, researchers and ecosystem builders came together with purpose.

SWEAT Africa had the support of ALI SA Fellows. Alongside them were entrepreneurs, investors and innovators who came ready to engage. The result was an atmosphere of energy, openness and a shared belief that Africa’s future will be built through collaboration.

A Programme With Purpose
The event programme was designed to do more than inspire. It asked practical questions about what it takes to move ideas forward, secure support and build ventures that can last.

Among the sessions were:
• Reverse pitching, where investors explained what they look for and how they make decisions.
• Panels on deep-tech and commercialisation.
• A discussion on AI and the realities of adopting new technology in the workplace.
• Conversations on research translation, funding pathways and responsible venture building.
• The SWEAT Equity student session, which looked at ownership, dilution and decision-making from the start.

This mix of sessions gave founders and students something valuable: not just ideas, but clarity.

Who Was There
More than 440 participants attended SWEAT Africa, representing 15 African countries and 22 countries globally. The event brought together founders, students, investors, researchers and ecosystem builders, all bringing different perspectives but a common interest in progress.

It put research, capital, founders and investors in the same conversation.

The Outcome
One of the clearest outcomes was a stronger sense of connection across the ecosystem. Founders gained deeper insight into what investors are looking for. Investors got closer to the people building solutions. Students and researchers had direct access to conversations that can shape the next step in their work.
The pitch competition gave that momentum a practical finish, with Urobo Biotech taking home the R100,000 prize after presenting a solution that turns bioplastic-rich waste into valuable products. It was a fitting example of the kind of venture SWEAT Africa is built to support: built on science and made for the market.

SWEAT Africa showed what can happen when the right people are in the same place. It brought together people who are serious about building, backing and strengthening the ecosystems Africa needs.
