Top editor and class XIV ALI SA Fellow Nwabisa Makunga has stepped up to become the head of one of South Africa’s largest journalism bodies.
The Africa Leadership Initiative South Africa (ALI SA) is ecstatic to congratulate our Fellow, Nwabisa Makunga, on her appointment as chair of the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF).
Nwabisa is a class XIV ALI SA Fellow. She has been a journalist for 20 years and takes the helm of the national media forum after serving as its deputy chair for the past two years. SANEF is a non-profit organisation and comprises editors, senior journalists, journalism trainers, and journalism academics in South Africa. The organisation has been around for 28 years and its objective is to uphold the values of ethical journalism, diversity, media freedom and quality media.
Nwabisa is currently the editor-in-chief of the Sowetan, an Arena Holdings publication. She has previously led The Herald and Weekend Post, as well as other posts in the Arena Holdings family.
Nwabisa’s ALI venture is aimed at addressing the pervasiveness of disinformation in the media and social media space and she will be embarking on an education programme for the youth to inform and guide them on discerning accurate news and information.
ALI SA is proud to have yet another excellent leader in their field fulfilling their potential and furthering ALI SA’s values. We wish Nwabisa all the best in her leadership role at SANEF.
