From Newsroom to Small Business Champion: Moipone Malefane’s Vutivi Platform for SMEs and Emerging Journalists

Award-winning journalist and ALI SA Class VI: Tshelela Fellow, Moipone Malefane, is showing how leading with strong values in media can help others get opportunities.

Through Vutivi Business News, the digital platform she founded in 2020, Moipone is giving South Africa’s small businesses a stronger voice while creating opportunities for emerging business journalists to gain practical experience and industry exposure.

Vutivi – meaning “knowledge” in Xitsonga, focuses on township entrepreneurs, SMMEs and innovators and operates as a hybrid newsroom, with reporters working remotely across the country. Alongside running the publication, Moipone mentors emerging writers through the Vutivi News Foundation and partnerships with institutions such as Tshwane University of Technology, extends her impact beyond the newsroom.

To read the full story about how Moipone is opening doors for TUT journalists and small businesses, see Tshwane University of Technology’s feature: Moipone Malefane opens doors for TUT journalists and small businesses (source: Tshwane University of Technology).
