Sha’ista is an advocate of the High Court of South Africa, practising in the areas of constitutional, public interest and environmental law. Sha’ista is a British Chevening Scholar (2009), a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow (2023) and an accredited mediator. She is passionate about transformative justice and using legal principles and constitutional values as a tool to bring about systemic change in society.
Holding a BA.LLB (UCT) and an LLM (SOAS, University of London), Sha’ista is a founding member of the Pan African Bar Association of South Africa (PABASA) where she sat on the national executive committee and set up and headed the Pius Langa School of Advocacy (2020-2022).
Before being called to the Bar, Sha’ista worked at two of the country’s top law firms in administrative, regulatory and employment law as well as at the leading public interest law firm in the country, where she focused on refugee law and land rights. She also served as a clerk at the Constitutional Court of South Africa and sits on the board of the Southern African Liaison Office, a non-profit organisation aimed at building consensus and encouraging dialogue on foreign policy with a particular focus on crisis and conflict on the African continent.
