Moshoeshoe Monare is Group Executive and Editor-in-Chief of SABC News (until 31 December 2024). He has 27 years’ experience in the media industry.
He was MD of Operations and Corporate Services at Arena Holdings and sat on the board of Tiso Blackstar Pty Ltd (a media company and predecessor of Arena). He also served on the boards of Media Development and Diversity Agency and Publishers Support Services (a community-media and print industry bodies respectively). He served as a member of the adjudication panel of the Press Council and he is former deputy chairperson of the SA National Editors Forum. He is a trustee of the Albie Sachs Trust for Constitutionalism and Rule of Law, and a former Bloomberg African Leadership Initiative Fellow.
Prior to him assuming executive and board roles, he spent almost two decades in the newsroom. He held senior editorial positions such as the editor of The Sunday Independent, deputy editor of Mail and Guardian, group political editor of Independent Newspapers, executive editor of The Star and managing editor of The Sunday Times and The Times.
He holds a BA (hon) in Media Studies and Journalism (Wits) and a Post Graduate Diploma in journalism (Wits), LLB (Unisa) and Management Advancement Programme (Wits Business School). He is currently an LLM (Constitutional Law) student at the University of Pretoria.
Monare is a married father of two and lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.
