Simphiwe Duma

Managing Partner and CTO at Admond Capital (Pty) Limited

Simphiwe Duma matriculated from Ohlange High School, Durban, in 1988. He received a scholarship to study in the USA and completed a post-matric qualification at Phillips Andover Academy in Massachusetts in 1989. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA and a Master of Engineering in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pretoria.

 Simphiwe began his career in 1994 in Massachusetts, USA, where he worked as a Project Engineer for Coneco. On his return to South Africa in 1995, he worked for Spescom Electronics and Eskom before joining a firm of Consulting Engineers. He was the first Chief Executive Officer of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) from 2010 to 2014. He has 25 years of experience as an Engineer and Technology Innovation Specialist. His exciting projects include the Gautrain, the World Cup Stadia, the 3rd Cellular Industry, Voice over IP, Domestic Solar and CoJ Blue Economy. 

Simphiwe is currently a Managing Partner and CTO at Admond Capital (a Venture Capital Firm focusing on technology-driven enterprises). He is also the Head of Admond Capital Seed and Growth Engine (ACSeedE), incubator and accelerator. In June 2022, Simphiwe established The Village Economy Institute to serve as a think tank for local and international experts interested in technologies that can improve people’s lives in small towns, villages and townships. He is a Professionally Registered Electrical Engineer by the Engineering Council of South Africa; a Senior Member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers; a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineers; a Fellow of the African Leadership Initiative-South Africa, and a Member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He is the South African coordinator of the MIT-Africa and South African Universities Program. 

Simphiwe is the author of the book Casting pearls before swine – the TIA Chronicles.
