Michael Buckham is a Fellow of the ninth class of the Africa Leadership Initiative-South Africa and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. Michael is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Prescient Limited, a financial services company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
Michael joined Prescient in 2007 in a finance role whilst the company was unlisted and played a key role in the Company’s listing process in August 2012. Michael has overall financial responsibility for the group which includes approximately 25 companies involved in investment management, unit trusts, administration, insurance, retirement funds and other services. Michael plays a role from a management and finance perspective for the Prescient Foundation which is an entity that has education as its core focus. The Foundation currently has several rural schools and disadvantaged school programs under its ambit. Michael was educated in Johannesburg and moved to Cape Town to attend the University of Cape Town where he obtained his Finance honours in a Business Science degree. He also achieved a post graduate degree in accounting at UCT and completed his articled period at Arthur Andersen where he successfully completed the Board Exam and achieved his CA (SA) designation. Michael also completed his CFA in 2002.
Outside of his professional associations as a Chartered Accountant, Michael sits on the Board of the Percy Fitzpatrick Insitute of Ornithology which is the leading ornithological institute on the African continent. Michael was asked to join the board in 2015 in order to provide financial input to the Institute as a whole.
Michael enjoys mountain biking in his spare time in order to keep fit and he occasionally gets onto the golf course when family time allows. He also has a passion for wildlife and photography, particularly the diverse and beautiful birdlife of our country. Michael has been married to Jean for 17 years and they have 4 children, Thomas (12), Adam (10), Jack (8) and Emma (4). He is a Fellow of the ninth class of the Africa Leadership Initiative-South Africa and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
