Unbundling Eskom: What difference will it make?

First Public Dialogue in Cape Town with Presidential Advisor, Anton Eberhard.

The decision to unbundle Eskom was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation address. Separating Eskom’s divisions, the argument went, would allow each entity to source funding individually. This would mean that each sector could identify and handle their own urgent needs independently, thus avoiding being overshadowed by the generation sector, with all of its constant challenges.

Anton Eberhard, Professor Emeritus and Senior Scholar at the University of Cape Town, will lead our upcoming dialogue about the implications of this unbundling. Prof Eberhard has worked in the energy sector across Sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions for more than 35 years, and was the founding Director of the Energy and Development Research Centre.

As director of the Power Futures Lab at the Graduate School of Business, Prof Eberhard’s research and teaching focus on:

  • Governance and regulatory incentives to improve utility performance;
  • The political economy of power sector reform;
  • Power investment challenges; and
  • Linkages to sustainable development.

His exposure to the complexity of Eskom could not be greater: he chairs a task team appointed by President Ramaphosa to resolve serious financial and technical challenges in Eskom, and to make proposals on the restructuring of the power sector.
