A Major Step in the Fight Against HIV: ALI SA Fellow Celebrates Historic Approval of Groundbreaking HIV Prevention Jab

As CEO of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and an ALI SA Fellow (Class XII: Isilimela), Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela has announced SAHPRA’s approval of Lenacapavir, a six-monthly pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) injection to help prevent HIV infection in adults and adolescents at high risk.

Describing the registration as a “game-changer” in a country with one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world, she has highlighted how this milestone positions South Africa as the first African country to register this long-acting prevention option, strengthening regulatory systems while expanding access to essential medicines.
