Brent Williams is a lawyer who has practised human rights law, development law and corporate & commercial law for more than 22 years. After eight years of practice as a partner in the corporate and commercial practice group of Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Inc he was elected the firm’s managing partner in April 2011. He still holds this portfolio. He commenced practice at Y Ebrahim & Co Inc, a small suburban practice in Athlone, Cape Town. He has served on the boards of directors/trustees of a number of NGO’s including; National Association of Democratic Lawyers (a human rights NGO), Kuyasa (a housing micro financing NGO, as a founding member and Chairman), and the District Six Museum Trust (the managing body of the District Six Museum). He has been an accredited lecturer for the Law Society of South Africa and apart from the practice of law has devoted considerable time and effort towards the transformation of the profession into being a profession that is more representative of and creates career opportunities for black and women lawyers. He is chairman of JSE-listed Sephaku Holdings. He is an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa since 1992 and holds a BA degree, University of Cape Town, a BProc degree, University of the Western Cape, an LLM degree, Harvard University Law School and, has attended Harvard Leadership Programme, Harvard Business School (short course). Brent is a Fellow of the ninth class of the Africa Leadership Initiative-South Africa and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
