Education in our sight

Famously, Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ALI Fellows are taking that seriously.

The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) analysis of South Africa’s education statistics makes for heartbreaking reading. Only 33% of matric candidates got 40% or higher for maths. Fewer than 30% of schools have a library; and fewer than 20% of government schools have a science laboratory. Only 13% of the 2006 Grade 1 class managed a university entry qualification when they wrote their final exams in 2017.

It makes sense that education – from the early-childhood development (ECD) phase all the way through tertiary education and beyond – would become a vital focus for many ALI Fellows. Here’s an overview of the work that is underway, and who is doing it.

Thanks to our valued partners and to all the Fellows who continue to contribute in many ways.
