Dumisani Tshabalala

Head of Academics at OWLAG – Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls

Dumisani Tshabalala is Head of Academics at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG), where he leads academic strategy, curriculum and assessment, teacher development and whole‑school performance. His work in Mathematics and academic leadership centres on helping young people, teachers and systems rethink what it means to learn, belong and flourish, with marks understood as traces of deeper changes in how students see themselves as capable knowers.

He also coordinates the OWLAG Trauma Informed Programme (O TiP), embedding trauma‑sensitive practices into daily routines and school‑wide systems. Over almost 18 years in education, he has worked as an external Mathematics specialist for national and provincial teacher intervention programmes, contributed to SASOL learner workbooks, and served on the Umalusi Post Examination Analysis team for Mathematics.

Dumisani completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Mathematics Education at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he received several academic awards, including a Merit Scholarship for action research. His current postgraduate work explores Mathematics pedagogy, the Van Hiele model and the idea of powerful knowledge in Further Studies Mathematics.

Within the IEB assessment community, he has served as a Senior Sub examiner for National Senior Certificate Mathematics and as examiner for the ADvTECH group aligned with the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA). He sees education as a social justice project in which Mathematics opens doors to economic mobility, meaningful work and democratic engagement.
