TechnoServe's mission is to build businesses that will create economic
growth in Africa and Latin America and produce widespread benefits,
particularly for the rural poor. At the same time, TechnoServe has
held a series of conferences and seminars to encourage business, political
and social leaders in developing countries to play an active role
in promoting economic development that is equitable.
"The Executive Seminar in Mozambique," which is being held
December 4-7, 2001, is the latest in this series. TechnoServe's Seminar
draws heavily on The Executive Seminar of The Aspen Institute, a world-renowned
institution that promotes "values-based" leadership around
the globe. Twenty prominent Mozambicans and South Africans are participating
in the three-day event, which is being held on Bazaruto, an island
off the southeast coast of Mozambique. Through reading and discussing
selections from the works of classic and modern writers -- including
Aristotle, Kant, Milton Friedman and Julius Nyerere - it is hoped
that these leaders will deepen their understanding of what constitutes
"a good society" and renew their resolve to help create
one in their own countries.
Keith Berwick and Peter A. Reiling are leading the Executive Seminar
in Mozambique. Mr. Berwick is a Senior Fellow of The Aspen Institute
and Executive Director of the Institute's Henry Crown Fellowship Program,
an advanced leadership development program for high-achieving young
executives and professionals. Mr. Reiling is TechnoServe's President
and CEO, and was named a Henry Crown Fellow at The Aspen Institute
in 1998. |
